No — there are no ads in any tier, ever. The entire ad system was removed to honour that promise. The Free tier is the whole toolbox minus the Pro automation and deep-tuning modules.

Free gives you the full toolbox: scanning, monitoring, the FPS overlay, disk and drive tools, privacy toggles, driver scanning, and most optimization modules. Pro unlocks the automation and the deepest tuning — the automatic gaming tuning Guardian applies, plus a small set of advanced modules. Ultra is everything in Pro, plus Smart Route. Only modules 11, 16, 19, 20, and 21 are Pro; every other module is free.
If you bought Pro or Ultra, paste the key from your purchase email on the License page, or sign in to the app with the email you paid with: your plan appears automatically. No. When a Pro license expires the app degrades to Free, but your applied optimizations and settings are kept. You'll get renewal reminders before expiry and during a short grace period.
Almost always, yes. Every reversible module backs up its original state before changing anything, so you get a per-module Undo button plus a Restore Defaults option in Settings. Only two modules are transient by nature — killing processes and clearing junk caches — and there's nothing to undo there.
No, and this is a point of pride. BRUTAL Optimizer never defragments an SSD — the right maintenance for flash is TRIM/ReTrim, which it uses. It only defragments confirmed spinning hard drives. It also refuses the classic myths other tools ship, like disabling SysMain/Prefetch or deleting the pagefile for "endurance."
No. The Disk Cleaner only clears a fixed allow-list of reclaimable locations (temp, caches, dumps, the Recycle Bin), never your documents, and it re-measures afterward to report the actual space freed. It never touches things like saved logins, cookies, or local storage.
Because no game or emulator is running. The counter only shows a real frame rate when a game is detected; the rest of the time it honestly shows "—" rather than displaying your desktop's redraw rate as if it were game FPS. Open a game and the number fills in.
Yes. It measures frame rate using a Windows display-statistics method with no game hooks or injection, so it doesn't tamper with the game. Toggle it with Ctrl + Shift + F.
It checks the BRUTAL server, downloads a verified installer, checks its hash, and runs it silently to replace itself in place. If a check fails it says "couldn't check," never a false "up to date." See Update and install problems and What "couldn't check" means.

Is BRUTAL Optimizer really free, or is it a trial?
The Free tier is permanent and is the full toolbox minus Pro automation and a few deep-tuning modules — with no ads in any tier. Pro adds Guardian’s automatic gaming tuning and the advanced modules. It's not a time-limited trial.
Will optimizing break my games or Windows?
Every reversible change is backed up first, with per-module Undo and a Restore Defaults button, so you can roll back cleanly. The app deliberately avoids risky myths (it never defrags SSDs, never deletes the pagefile, never disables SysMain as "endurance").
Do I need Pro to see my FPS or use the overlay?
No. The FPS overlay is free. Press Ctrl + Shift + F to toggle it; it shows a real frame rate only while a game or emulator is running, and an honest "No game" otherwise.
How do I fully close the app instead of minimizing it to the tray?
Clicking the X minimizes BRUTAL Optimizer to the system tray so background features keep running. To quit completely, right-click the tray icon near the clock and choose Exit.
