Most problems with BRUTAL Optimizer come down to one of a handful of causes: the app needs administrator rights and didn't get them, a background tool like winget or Windows Update couldn't be reached, or a screen needs a quick re-scan. This page walks through the issues people hit most often and the fastest honest fix for each. Nothing here touches your files, and almost every fix is just a click or a restart.
The app won't launch, or closes instantly
BRUTAL Optimizer is a single elevated app: it does deep registry and service tuning, so Windows requires it to run as administrator. If it flashes and disappears, or you never see a window, the most likely cause is a declined or blocked elevation prompt.
- Right-click the desktop or Start Menu shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
- When the User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears, click Yes. If you click No, the app cannot start.
- If you don't see a UAC prompt at all, your organization or antivirus may be blocking it — see Why the app needs administrator.
If you closed the window with the X, the app didn't quit — it minimized to the system tray (next to the clock). Double-click the tray icon to bring it back, or right-click it and choose Exit to fully close.
A scan shows nothing, or says "couldn't check"
BRUTAL Optimizer is built to be honest: if it can't actually verify something, it tells you so instead of pretending everything is fine. A few screens lean on Windows' own background tools, and when those tools can't be reached you'll see a clear message rather than a false green light.
- App Updates uses Windows'
winget tool. If you see "couldn't check" or "check unavailable," winget either isn't installed or didn't answer. Install App Installer from the Microsoft Store, then scan again. - Driver Update uses the Windows Update service. An amber "couldn't fully check" means the check was interrupted — try again, and make sure Windows Update isn't paused.

The FPS overlay isn't appearing
The FPS overlay only shows live numbers when a game or emulator is actually running — that's deliberate. When nothing is detected, it honestly shows a dash and "No game" rather than inventing a frame rate.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + F to toggle the overlay on and off.
- Open a game or emulator. The overlay fills in once a game is detected; you may briefly see "Measuring…" while it primes.
- Check the overlay position in the FPS Overlay settings page — it may be in a screen corner you're not looking at, or behind a fullscreen-exclusive window.
An optimization didn't seem to do anything
Some modules are intentionally invisible — they change registry or power settings that only show their effect under load. A few things to check:
- Pro-only modules are skipped on the Free tier. Only a handful of modules (11, 16, 19, 20, 21) are Pro; everything else is free. If a module shows a Pro badge and you're on Free, it won't run.
- Many modules need a restart to take full effect (timer, power, and boot-level tweaks especially). The app will tell you when a restart is recommended.
- Used the wrong toggle? Each module has its own Undo button to reverse it cleanly.
Changes I made came back, or I want to revert
BRUTAL Optimizer backs up the original state of every reversible module before it changes anything, so you can always go back.
- Use the per-module Undo button on the Optimize page to reverse a single module.
- Use Restore Defaults in Settings to roll back everything at once.
- Two modules — Process/Service Killer and Cache Cleaner — are transient (they kill processes or delete junk), so there's nothing to undo; just re-run the affected app or let Windows rebuild its caches.
Common issues / troubleshooting
- UAC prompt every launch: that's expected — the app genuinely needs admin and must ask each time unless you start it via its scheduled-task startup option.
- SmartScreen or antivirus warns about the download: the installer is signed by Arhas India (OPC) Private Limited — check that publisher name before running it, and never add an exclusion. See Update and install problems.

Do I have to run BRUTAL Optimizer as administrator every time?
Yes, unless you enable "Start with Windows," which launches it elevated at sign-in without a UAC prompt. The app makes registry, service, and power changes that Windows only allows from an elevated process, so a non-admin launch can't work.
Why does the app stay open after I click the X?
The X minimizes BRUTAL Optimizer to the system tray instead of quitting, so the Guardian background service and overlay keep working. To fully exit, right-click the tray icon and choose Exit.
A scan says "couldn't check" instead of "up to date." Is something broken?
